This specialist service caters for GP queries, not direct patient referrals in the areas of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. The specialist is fully qualified and registered with the HPCSA as a Physician and Endocrinologist. This is meant for practices in South Africa only.

This is not a traditional referral service. It is merely for guidance and support. The primary responsibility for the patient lies with the GP.

Hours for consultation are Monday to Friday, from 8am to 12 noon. Leave dates will be made clear.
The patients discussed should be stable outpatient cases. All complicated, emergency and inpatient cases should be referred to local specialists. This is not meant to replace local specialists; it is just merely guidance.
The assessment, including examination is done primarily by the GP. A care plan is created and this can be discussed, along with relevant blood results, special tests and management options.
All consults should include a short clinical summary that includes History, examination, vital signs and investigations and the clinical question that needs to be answered.

This serves as specialist advice and support for GP’s.

Confidentiality is essential and will be maintained. The advice is for a South African Health environment only.
There is a clear limit to what this service can offer, but it is hoped that GPs will find this service useful, especially in towns that are deficient in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology services
